Why Healthcare Costs Should Be Part of Every Retirement Plan

Many Americans spend years saving for retirement, but one of the largest expenses they may face is often overlooked: healthcare.

According to Fidelity Investments’ 2026 Retiree Health Care Cost Estimate, a 65 year old retiring in 2026 can expect to spend an average of $185,500 on healthcare expenses throughout retirement. That estimate has increased by 7.5% compared to last year and does not include long term care expenses.

What Does the Estimate Include?

The projected amount includes many of the healthcare expenses retirees commonly pay, such as:

* Medicare Part B premiums

* Medicare Part D prescription drug premiums

* Deductibles

* Copayments

* Coinsurance

* Out of pocket prescription drug costs

However, it does not include long term care services such as nursing homes, assisted living, or extended home health care, which can significantly increase retirement expenses.

Several factors continue to drive healthcare spending higher:

* Rising medical and hospital costs

* Increased use of healthcare services as people live longer

* Higher costs associated with managing chronic conditions

* Prescription drug expenses

As Americans enjoy longer life expectancies, planning for healthcare has become just as important as planning for housing and daily living expenses.

Does Medicare Cover Everything?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that Medicare pays for all healthcare expenses.

While Medicare provides valuable coverage, beneficiaries are still responsible for premiums, deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and many services that Medicare does not fully cover. Fidelity found that more than half of pre retirees mistakenly believe Medicare will pay all of their healthcare costs.

Planning ahead can make a significant difference. Consider these strategies:

* Enroll in Medicare on time to avoid late enrollment penalties.

* Review Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement options to find coverage that fits your healthcare needs.

* If eligible before enrolling in Medicare, contribute to a Health Savings Account to help pay future qualified medical expenses.

* Include healthcare costs as a separate category in your retirement budget rather than assuming Medicare will cover everything.
