Why Are Some Cars Cheaper to Insure?

Insurance companies do not look only at the purchase price of a vehicle. They also consider the likelihood of a claim and the potential cost of repairing or replacing the vehicle.

Several factors can help lower the cost of insuring a car:

• Good crash test ratings

• Safety features such as automatic emergency braking

• Lower parts and repair costs

• Easy access to replacement parts

• Fewer claims associated with the model

• Lower risk of theft

• Lower vehicle replacement costs

For example, Subaru ranked first in this study. Many Subaru vehicles offer strong safety features and perform well in crash tests. Models such as the Forester and Crosstrek also frequently appear on lists of vehicles that cost less to insure.

Does a Less Expensive Brand Always Mean Cheaper Insurance?

No. Two vehicles made by the same manufacturer can have very different insurance premiums.

For example, the standard version of a vehicle may be reasonably priced to insure, while the sports, luxury, or electric version of the same vehicle may cost much more. Engine power, vehicle price, body style, equipment level, and the cost of replacement parts can all affect the premium.

The trim level also matters. A version with a more powerful engine, expensive equipment, or a sports package may cost more to insure than the base version of the same model.

Why Are Luxury and Sports Cars Usually More Expensive to Insure?

Luxury vehicles, sports cars, and some electric vehicles often have expensive parts and complex technology. Even a relatively minor accident may damage cameras, radar equipment, sensors, or advanced driver assistance systems.

After replacing a windshield or bumper, the cameras and sensors may also need to be recalibrated. This can significantly increase repair costs.

Insurance companies also consider actual claims data. If a particular model is stolen more often or tends to have more expensive claims, its insurance premium may be higher.

Are Pickup Trucks Always More Expensive to Insure?

Not necessarily. The data from this study shows that some pickup trucks may cost less to insure than certain sedans. This may be one reason brands such as GMC, Ford, and Chevrolet appear on the list.

However, vehicle size alone does not determine the cost of insurance. The exact model, purchase price, claims history, and how the vehicle is used also matter.
