The Hidden Costs of Family Caregiving

Caring for an aging parent, an ill spouse, or another family member often begins with love and a sense of responsibility. Over time, however, the costs can affect a family’s budget, employment, and retirement savings.

How Much Does Family Caregiving Cost?

According to an October 2026 AARP report, family caregivers spend an average of $11,508 of their own money each year caring for loved ones. That amounts to approximately $959 per month.

These expenses extend beyond medical treatment and prescriptions. Housing assistance, groceries, transportation, and everyday necessities also contribute to the total. Housing, household expenses, and medical costs together account for 71% of caregivers’ spending.

The Impact on Work and Financial Security

The financial burden of caregiving goes beyond paying bills. Some caregivers reduce their working hours, take time off, or change their work arrangements to support a loved one.

AARP reports that 65% of working caregivers experienced at least one change or disruption related to their work because of caregiving responsibilities. Some families also borrow money, withdraw savings, or reduce retirement contributions to cover expenses.

Why Has Caregiver Support Become a Public Issue?

Support for family caregivers became part of economic and political discussions ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. An AARP survey across 43 competitive congressional districts found that 77% of voters age 50 and older were more likely to support a candidate who favored a tax credit to help unpaid family caregivers.

This finding reflects voter interest in financial support. It does not, by itself, mean that a new tax credit has been enacted or is available to claim.

Where Can Families Start?

Begin by tracking monthly caregiving expenses and discussing financial and practical responsibilities with other family members. When reviewing insurance and assistance programs, clarify which services are covered, what eligibility requirements apply, and how much you may need to pay yourself.

Caring for loved ones becomes more sustainable when the caregiver’s own health, time, and financial security are also part of the family’s plan.
