Possible Increase in Social Security Benefits in 2027: How Much More Could Retirees Receive?

Recent estimates indicate that Social Security payments may increase by approximately 3.5% to 3.6% in 2027. If confirmed, this would be the largest annual increase in three years.

This increase, known as the Cost of Living Adjustment or COLA, is intended to help retirees and other Social Security beneficiaries maintain their purchasing power as prices rise.

How Much Could Payments Increase?

The exact increase will depend on each person’s current benefit amount. Based on current estimates, an average retiree could receive approximately $70 to $75 more per month.

For example, if someone currently receives $2,000 per month:

With a 3.5% increase, the monthly payment would rise to approximately $2,070.

With a 3.6% increase, the monthly payment would rise to approximately $2,072.

These amounts are only estimates, and the final percentage has not yet been officially announced.

How Is COLA Calculated?

Each year, the Social Security Administration reviews changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as the CPI W.

To determine the 2027 COLA, the average index for July, August, and September 2026 will be compared with the same period in the previous year. The purpose of this calculation is to help Social Security payments keep pace with increases in the cost of food, housing, transportation, health care, and other living expenses.

Social Security benefits increased by 2.8% in 2026. The projected increase of 3.5% to 3.6% for 2027 suggests that inflation continues to affect household expenses, particularly for older adults.

When Will the Final Percentage Be Announced?

The official 2027 COLA is expected to be announced after the final September inflation data is released. For most beneficiaries, the new increase will take effect with their January 2027 payments.

Beneficiaries usually receive a notice from the Social Security Administration in December showing their exact benefit amount for the coming year. This information will also be available through their my Social Security account.

Will Retirees Receive the Entire Increase?

Not necessarily. People whose Medicare Part B premium is deducted directly from their Social Security payment may not see the full COLA increase in their net monthly payment.

If Medicare premiums increase in 2027, part of the Social Security increase may be used to cover the higher premium. For many older adults, the most important figure is not simply the COLA percentage, but the amount that will actually be deposited after Medicare premiums are deducted.

Who Will Be Eligible for the Increase?

COLA generally applies to the following groups:

Social Security retirement beneficiaries

Eligible spouses and survivors

Social Security Disability Insurance recipients

Supplemental Security Income recipients

The increase will not be the same dollar amount for everyone. It will be calculated based on each person’s current benefit amount.
