Pig Butchering Scam
“Cryptocurrency investing is a guaranteed opportunity! Let me show you how.”
Although this type of scam emerged only in recent years, it has quickly become one of the most successful and profitable forms of fraud worldwide.
The term “Pig Butchering” comes from the livestock industry, where pigs are fattened before slaughter. Similarly, scammers spend time “fattening up” their victims by building trust and encouraging larger and larger investments before ultimately stealing everything.
In many cases, the scam begins with a fake romantic relationship. The scammer develops an emotional connection with the victim and eventually persuades them to invest in cryptocurrency.
More commonly, the scheme starts with a “wrong number” text message that appears to have been sent by mistake. You have probably received one of these messages yourself from an unfamiliar number.
If the recipient responds, the scammer apologizes for the mistake and then continues the conversation. Often, they send photos of an attractive and successful-looking person to gain the victim’s trust.
Sometimes the initial contact occurs through social media in the form of a friend request, a follow, or even what appears to be a legitimate business opportunity.
Once the victim is engaged, the conversation gradually shifts toward cryptocurrency investing. The real objective is to convince the victim to transfer as much money as possible. The scammer typically starts with small amounts and shows the victim impressive returns that are often completely fabricated.
As trust grows, the victim is encouraged to invest increasingly larger sums. Some people have deposited their entire life savings or retirement accounts into these fraudulent cryptocurrency platforms. Others have even withdrawn the cash value of their life insurance policies to “invest” in what they believed was a legitimate opportunity.
Eventually, when the scammer believes there is no more money to extract, the victim loses access to the account or digital wallet. The scammer disappears, taking all of the funds with them.
The best protection is simple: be extremely cautious of investment advice from strangers online, especially when it involves cryptocurrency, guaranteed returns, or pressure to invest quickly. If an opportunity sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
