Prescription medications are an important part of healthcare, and their costs can add up quickly. To help cover these expenses, Medicare offers a separate prescription drug benefit known as Medicare Part D.
Medicare Part D is a prescription drug program that helps cover the cost of many self-administered prescription medications drugs you pick up from a pharmacy and take at home.

How Can You Get Part D Coverage?
There are two ways to receive Medicare prescription drug coverage:
* Enroll in a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) if you have Original Medicare.
* Enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) that includes prescription drug coverage (commonly referred to as an MAPD plan).
Is Enrollment in Part D Required?
If you have Original Medicare and do not have other creditable prescription drug coverage, you should generally enroll in a Medicare Part D plan.
If you are eligible for Part D but go without creditable prescription drug coverage for an extended period, you may have to pay a Late Enrollment Penalty (LEP) if you enroll later.
What Are the Costs of Part D?
Depending on the plan you choose, your costs may include:
* A monthly premium
* An annual deductible
* Copayments or coinsurance for your prescription medications
