Life Insurance Tells a Different Story for Everyone

When illness enters a family, it affects more than just one person’s health. Worry, medical expenses, transportation, caregiving and the family’s financial future all become part of everyday life. That experience showed me more clearly than ever that no one can predict what the future may bring, but we can be better prepared for its financial consequences.

To me, life insurance is more than an insurance policy or a number written on a piece of paper. Life insurance means that if something happens to me one day, my family will not have to face a financial crisis while also coping with grief and emotional stress.

But not everyone’s story is like mine.

For Some People, Life Insurance Means Protecting a Home

Imagine a young couple who, after years of saving, are finally ready to purchase their first home. They have saved enough for the down payment and are preparing to take out a thirty year mortgage.

At that moment, they are probably more focused on the interest rate, monthly payments and choosing the right home. However, there is another important question:

If one of them were no longer there one day, would the other be able to make the mortgage payments alone?

For this family, the primary purpose of life insurance may be to pay off all or part of the remaining mortgage balance. They may need enough coverage to help ensure that the surviving spouse is not forced to sell the home.

In this story, life insurance means protecting the home the family worked so hard to build.

For Another Family, Life Insurance Means Protecting a Child’s Future

Now imagine parents who have recently welcomed a child. Their lives now include new expenses such as childcare, healthcare, education and daily living costs.

Their main concern may not be the mortgage. They may be thinking more about who would pay for their child’s living and educational expenses if one of the parents were no longer there.

For this family, life insurance can mean creating opportunities for their child’s future. This coverage can help give the child the opportunity to continue their education and have a more stable future, even if one parent is no longer by their side.

For a Business Owner, Life Insurance Has a Different Meaning

A person who has built a small business is not responsible only for their family. Employees, business partners and customers may also depend on the continued operation of the business.

If that person passes away unexpectedly, who will pay the business debts? How will the business partner’s share be handled? Will the family be forced to sell the business quickly?

For a business owner, life insurance can be a way to protect their family, their business partner and everything they have worked to build over the years.

For Someone Who Supports Aging Parents

Another person may not have children, own a home or carry significant debt. However, they may pay part of their aging parents’ living or medical expenses every month.

If that person’s income disappears, who will continue providing this financial support?

For them, life insurance can be a way to continue caring for their parents. Being single or not having children does not necessarily mean that someone has no need for life insurance.

Every Person Has Different Needs

One person wants the mortgage to be paid.

Another is concerned about the future of their children.

Someone wants to make sure their spouse will have enough income after they are gone.

Another person financially supports aging parents.

And someone like me, after experiencing cancer in the family, thinks more deeply about protecting loved ones from the financial pressure of unexpected events.

That is why the same amount or type of life insurance cannot be recommended for everyone. The right choice should be based on each person’s income, debts, dependents, family circumstances, budget and future goals.
