Is the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit Mandatory?
The Medicare Annual Wellness Visit is not mandatory. It is an optional preventive service covered under Medicare Part B.
The Annual Wellness Visit is different from a comprehensive annual physical examination. Its main purpose is to review your overall health and create or update a personalized plan to help prevent potential illnesses and disabilities.
During this visit, your doctor or other healthcare provider may measure your height, weight, and blood pressure. Your medical and family history, current medications, memory, risk of depression, risk of falling, level of physical activity, and dietary habits may also be reviewed.
Your doctor may also provide recommendations regarding necessary vaccines, tests, and screenings. You may also discuss your wishes regarding future medical care in case you become unable to make healthcare decisions for yourself.
This visit is not designed to diagnose or treat a specific medical condition. If you have a particular health concern or symptoms, it is best to schedule a separate appointment for evaluation.
If your doctor accepts Medicare assignment, you will pay nothing for the Annual Wellness Visit, and the Medicare Part B deductible will not apply.
However, if your doctor provides additional services, performs tests, provides treatment, or conducts a comprehensive physical examination during the same appointment, you may be responsible for the deductible, coinsurance, or the full cost of those services.
Your first Annual Wellness Visit cannot take place during the first 12 months after your Medicare Part B coverage begins or within 12 months of your Welcome to Medicare visit. Once you become eligible, you may receive this service once every 12 months.
You are not required to have completed a Welcome to Medicare visit before receiving an Annual Wellness Visit.
When scheduling your appointment, let the doctor’s office know that you would like to schedule a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit. Before receiving any additional tests or services, ask whether they are covered by Medicare and whether you may have any out of pocket costs.
