Federal Income Taxes in 2027: What Is Changing?

The IRS has announced the federal income tax brackets and standard deduction amounts for 2027. These figures apply to income earned in 2027 and generally affect tax returns filed in 2028.

Federal Income Tax Rates for 2027

Tax rates still range from 10% to 37%, but the income thresholds have been adjusted for inflation. These brackets apply to taxable ordinary income after applicable deductions, rather than total earnings.

Single Filers

10% on taxable income up to $12,800.

12% on the portion over $12,800 through $52,025.

22% on the portion over $52,025 through $109,125.

24% on the portion over $109,125 through $208,325.

32% on the portion over $208,325 through $264,550.

35% on the portion over $264,550 through $661,375.

37% on the portion over $661,375.

Married Couples Filing Jointly

10% on taxable income up to $25,600.

12% on the portion over $25,600 through $104,050.

22% on the portion over $104,050 through $218,250.

24% on the portion over $218,250 through $416,650.

32% on the portion over $416,650 through $529,100.

35% on the portion over $529,100 through $793,650.

37% on the portion over $793,650.

How Much Is the Standard Deduction?

The standard deduction reduces the amount of income subject to tax for taxpayers who claim it.

For 2027, the base standard deduction is $16,600 for single filers and married individuals filing separately, $33,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $24,925 for those eligible to file as head of household.

Eligible taxpayers may qualify for a higher standard deduction based on age or blindness.

What Does Moving Into a Higher Tax Bracket Mean?

Federal income tax is calculated progressively. Being in the 22% bracket does not mean all your income is taxed at 22%. Only the portion of taxable income within that bracket is taxed at that rate.

As you plan for the coming year, consider your filing status, deductions, and tax credits along with your income.
