Does Homeowners Insurance Fully Cover Your Gold and Expensive Jewelry?
Many people assume that all belongings inside their home, including gold, jewelry, expensive watches, and collectibles, are fully covered by homeowners insurance. Although a standard homeowners insurance policy generally provides coverage for these items, the amount an insurance company will pay for certain valuables may be very limited.
Jewelry Coverage Under Homeowners Insurance
Homeowners insurance may cover damage to jewelry and other valuables caused by risks such as:
• Fire
• Storms and strong winds
• Theft
• Vandalism
However, having coverage does not mean that the insurance company will pay the full value of the item. Many insurance policies have a separate coverage limit for the theft of gold and jewelry, which may be approximately $1,500.
For example, if a ring worth $8,000 is stolen, a standard homeowners insurance policy may only pay up to the limit specified in the policy.
How Can You Increase Coverage for Valuable Items?
If you own expensive jewelry, watches, artwork, furs, or collectibles, there are generally two ways to increase your coverage.
1. Increase the Coverage Limit
With this option, the coverage limit for valuable items under your homeowners insurance policy is increased. This option usually costs less, but there may still be limits for each individual item and for the total amount of the loss.
For example, the insurance company may pay a maximum of $2,000 for each item and up to a total of $5,000 for all valuable items.
2. Schedule Valuable Items Separately
Another option is to add special coverage commonly known as Scheduled Personal Property or a Floater. With this coverage, each valuable item is individually listed on the policy with its description and appraised value.
This coverage is generally broader and may also cover certain accidental losses, such as:
• Dropping a ring down the sink drain
• Losing a piece of jewelry
• Leaving an expensive watch in a hotel room
• Accidentally breaking or damaging a valuable item
The type and amount of coverage depend on the insurance company’s requirements and the terms of the policy.
Why Is a Professional Appraisal Important?
To schedule jewelry and other valuable items separately, you will generally need to provide a valid professional appraisal. The appraisal establishes the approximate value of the item and may be important when purchasing coverage or filing a claim.
It is a good idea to update appraisals periodically because the value of gold, jewelry, artwork, and collectibles may increase over time.
What Can You Do to Better Protect Your Valuables?
• Take photographs of your jewelry and other valuable items.
• Keep purchase receipts and appraisal reports.
• Record the serial numbers of watches and other expensive items.
• Create a complete inventory of your household belongings.
• Review the coverage limits for valuable items in your insurance policy.
• Ask whether accidental damage, loss, and items taken outside the home are covered.
• Inform your insurance agent about changes in the value of your belongings.
Review Your Coverage Before a Loss Occurs
Your homeowners insurance policy may provide coverage for jewelry and other valuables, but the coverage limits may not be enough to replace them. Reviewing your policy and scheduling expensive items separately can help protect you from significant financial losses if they are stolen, lost, or damaged.
