Dental Coverage in the Marketplace
In the Marketplace, you can choose a health insurance plan with or without dental benefits. If your health plan does not include dental coverage, you can still purchase a separate dental plan.
Important: You cannot purchase a Marketplace dental plan by itself unless you are also purchasing a Marketplace health plan at the same time.
Two Ways to Get Dental Coverage
1. Health Plans That Include Dental Coverage
Some Marketplace health plans include dental benefits. When comparing plans, you can see which health plans include dental coverage.
If dental coverage is included in your health plan, the premium you pay covers both medical and dental benefits.
2. Separate Dental Plans
In some cases, separate dental plans are available through the Marketplace. You can view these options while shopping for and comparing plans. If you choose a separate dental plan, you will pay a separate premium in addition to the premium for your Marketplace health plan.
Pay Attention to Waiting Periods
Some separate dental plans may have a waiting period for certain adult dental services.
If you enroll in a plan with a waiting period, those services will not be covered until the waiting period has ended. However, you will still need to pay your monthly premium during the waiting period.
Before enrolling, make sure to ask the insurance company about any waiting periods and how they apply to the services you may need.
How Can You Preview Dental Plans Before Enrolling?
By answering a few questions about your household and income, you can preview health plans that include dental benefits as well as separate dental plans.
When comparing dental plans in the Marketplace, you can review important information such as:
