Can You Get Part of Your Medicare Part B Premium Back?
Many people enrolled in Medicare pay their Medicare Part B premium every month. However, what many people do not realize is that some Medicare Advantage plans offer a benefit that can help reduce this cost. This benefit is known as the Part B Premium Giveback, and for eligible beneficiaries, it can lower their monthly healthcare expenses.
What Is the Part B Premium Giveback?
The Part B Premium Giveback is a benefit offered by certain Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans. Through this benefit, the insurance company pays a portion of your monthly Medicare Part B premium on your behalf.
You do not receive this money as a direct cash payment. Instead, the amount is applied toward your Part B premium. If your Part B premium is deducted from your Social Security benefits, your monthly Social Security payment will increase accordingly. If you pay your Part B premium directly to Medicare, your monthly premium bill will be reduced.
The amount of the Giveback benefit varies from one plan to another. Some plans reimburse only a small portion of the Part B premium, while others may cover a much larger amount.
The amount available depends on several factors, including:
• The insurance company
• The Medicare Advantage plan you choose
• Your state, county, and ZIP code
To qualify for the Part B Premium Giveback, you generally must:
• Be enrolled in Medicare Part B
• Enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan that offers this benefit
• Be responsible for paying your own Part B premium
If your Part B premium is paid by another program, such as Medicaid, you generally will not be eligible for the Giveback benefit.
Do All Medicare Advantage Plans Offer This Benefit? No.
The Part B Premium Giveback is available only through certain Medicare Advantage plans. Even when an insurance company offers this benefit, it may only be available in specific geographic areas. Before enrolling in a plan, it is important to verify whether the Giveback benefit is available where you live.
A plan that offers a larger Giveback amount may also have limitations in other important areas. For example, it may have:
• A smaller provider network
• Higher copayments or coinsurance
• Limited prescription drug coverage
• Fewer additional benefits than other available plans
For this reason, the Giveback benefit should not be the only factor when choosing a Medicare Advantage plan. Prescription drug coverage, provider networks, out of pocket costs, and the plan’s overall benefits should all be carefully evaluated before making a decision.
